Job Title: Part-time Cooks for Burntisland Community
Pay: £20 per hour
Contract: Self Employed
Summary and main purpose of role:
Burntisland Community Suppers (formerly Supper at the Sally) aims to run a community meal in a friendly and welcoming environment. Our aim is to bring the community together on Saturday nights from November to March 5pm to 6.30pm at the Salvation Army Hall in Burntisland.
Last year the suppers were run entirely by volunteers and ran from January to March but this year we aim to extend the suppers to run over the darkest time of the year. The aim of the suppers is to encourage community connections especially encouraging people who are on their own and those struggling with the cost of living crisis to come along for a hot meal. Last year this was 3 courses of simple food including soup, mains such as sausages, macaroni cheese, burgers, steak pie and puddings such as school dinner cake, ice cream and front, chocolate sponge and custard. We welcomed up to 40 guests of all ages from 2 months to 94. People made new friends and reconnected with old ones. The suppers run on a Pay What You Can basis and our focus is on people living in Burntisland.
Volunteers included a young volunteer aged 15 up to retired volunteers and everyone in between. Volunteers learned new skills, made new friends and some moved into work. We encourage all volunteers to gain their food hygiene certificate and also offered first aid training.
We are open to cooks/chefs working alternate weeks to suit their schedule so this is an opportunity for two or more cooks/chefs to gain further experience in delivering tasty meals to a small group of diners in a community setting and to earn some money.
The post will require you to be a competent cook/chef, confident in completing appropriate paperwork and comfortable to work with volunteers as part of the team. The ethos of the project is that there are a number of roles including washing up, assistant to cook, server, front of house, shopping, organising, publicity, finance and volunteers may move around these roles or select a preference. We aim to make collective decisions and there are task descriptions attached to each role which have been adapted as we learn better ways to serve our community. We do not expect the cook/chef to be in charge of the whole event but to take responsibility for the key aspects of their own role (e.g. following health and hygiene law, keeping food at appropriate temperatures, menus and shopping requirements- we would expect the cook/chef to work with the volunteers themselves on what aspects of the cook role they are each responsible for). We aim to have a learning culture and learn how to serve our community better together.
Hours of work are likely to be 1- 7.30 on a Saturday and occasional time during the week for a group meeting(no more than monthly) or coordinating shopping which can be done online or by phone. Payment will be arranged through Burntisland Community Development Trust as this is a subgroup of this organisation. You will be reliable, enthusiastic and capable of positive volunteer and diner interaction and remain consistent with our ethos and focus. You will have good communication skills, a friendly and engaging personality and comfortable working with members of the public. You will be flexible and a positive role model and engage with volunteers in a friendly and professional manner.
